Although two separate organizations, we operate mostly as one unit. We protect an area of 5.5 square miles with a population of approx. 13,000 people. Derby is located about 10 miles outside of New Haven. Together we operate 2 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 2 ambulances, 2 hazmat units, and 2 marine units. Engine 13, Rescue 18, Haz-Mat 1, 4Kilo 1, Marine 2 and 3 along with the Derby FD Dive Team were called to Ansonia to assist them with a potential suicide attempt. Units arriving reported that a person potentially jumped into the Naugatuck River either from the Levee or a bridge. Units found a wet hat and sneakers at the area where the person was last seen. Units worked the scene for approx. 2 hours and had no results, it was learned a short time later that the individual was located in the emergency room at Griffin Hospital. Working with a regional drill ambulance, fire and haz-mat crews responded to a number of locations today. A public health preparedness drill brought Chief officers to a collection site to simulate the dispensation of prescriptions to protect first responders from a simulated communicable disease.

In conjunction with this exercise a simulation of a release of hazardous materials with patients in need of decontamination arrived at Griffin Hospital. Haz-Mat and EMS crews were dispatched and worked with Griffin Hospital staff to decontaminate and treat simulated victims of the incident. Crews learned valuable information from the exercise and opened lines of communication with medical professionals at Griffin Hospital.
